Thursday Gavel Grab Briefs

In these other dispatches about fair and imparital courts:

  • Alabama Chief Justice Chuck Malone advised his fellow judges that the judicial system is “under attack” and that judges should educate lawmakers and the public about the negative impact of court budget cuts, reports the Alabama Press-Register.
  • New York City filed an amicus brief Wednesday with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of an 83 year old woman challenging the federal Defense of Marriage Act on the grounds that it violates the Constitution’s equal protection principles, Thomson Reuters reported.
  • In an Atlantic article discussing the corrupting influence of special interests on legislators, disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff used the example of federal judges to underscore the depth of corruption within the legislative branch. Actions that would be considered preposterous conduct between a lobbyist and a judge are commonplace interactions between lobbyists and legislators, Abramoff argued.
