A conservative group seeking to oust Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins in a retention (yes-or-no) election this fall will launch a four-day, statewide “NO Wiggins” bus tour on Sept. 24.

Defenders of fair and impartial courts and some newspaper editorials have criticized the ouster drive as politicizing the courts and wrongly turning a retention election into a referendum on a controversial court ruling.

A similar bus tour was part of a 2010 ouster drive that swept three justices off Iowa’s highest court over their role in a unanimous court opinion that permitted same-sex people to marry.

This year’s bus tour was announced by Iowans for Freedom, a project of The Family Leader group, according to a Des Moines Register blog. CitizenLink is also sponsoring the tour;  co-sponsors are the National Organization for Marriage and CatholicVote.org.
