Opinion: ‘Keep the Supreme Court Above Politics’

There is a threat of a constitutional crisis looming in the wake of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death, and a refusal by some some Senate Judiciary Committee members to consider any nominee put forward by President Obama, Kristen Clarke writes in an op-ed for The Hill.

“We should not allow politicians to stand by and use the Court as a pawn in a political game,” says Clarke, the president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a Justice at Stake partner organization. “Any effort that seeks to play politics with the Court threatens to undermine not only the smooth operation of the Supreme Court but also the faith of the American people in the rule of law.”

Clarke’s opinion was headlined, “Let’s keep the Supreme Court above politics.” Meanwhile, veteran Supreme Court commentator Linda Greenhouse wrote in The New York Times on “The Supreme Court’s New Era.”
