Concerns Raised Over Court Closing Impact in Rural Cities

Will low-income people be denied justice, and rural cities become unsafe, as a result of a plan to close seven satellite Fresno County (California) courthouses and consolidate services in downtown Fresno?

Critics contend the closure plan, intended to save $2 million, could have this dire impact, according to a Fresno Bee article.

“This is so contrary to access to justice that everyone talks about,” Fresno County Board of Supervisors President Debbie Poochigian told Gary Hoff, presiding judge of Fresno County Superior Court, at a recent meeting.

Judge Hoff said state budget constraints no longer permit as wide a net of public services as before. “We cannot operate those branch courts anymore,” he said. “They’re not cost-effective.”
