JAS Participates in Examining ‘Why Courts Matter: LGBT Issues’

Praveen Fernandes, Justice at Stake’s director of federal affairs and diversity initiatives, was among legal experts discussing the topic “Why Courts Matter: LGBT Issues” at a Washington, D.C. forum on Monday.

The Center for American Progress hosted the panel discussion, which is available for webcast viewing by clicking here. The session focused on what’s at stake in the courts for the LGBT community as issues involving LGBT rights end up in court, and on the implications of Lawrence v. Texas for today’s legal challenges involving LGBT Americans.

Also participating in the panel were Paul Smith, a Supreme Court litigator and lead attorney in Lawrence v. Texas; and Maya Rupert, Federal Policy Director, National Center for Lesbian Rights.

The session was introduced by Andrew Blotky, Director, Legal Progress, Center for American Progress; and it was moderated by Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor, Slate.com; contributing editor, Newsweek; and author of the New Yorker article, “Extreme Makeover: The Story Behind Lawrence v. Texas.”
