Another Judicial Nominations Flap in New Jersey

A trio of Democratic state senators has asked New Jersey Chief Justice Stuart Rabner to investigate allegations that a Republican senator attempted to pressure two judges in an effort to secure a judicial nomination for former Attorney General Paula Dow.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie has battled Democratic legislators over judicial nominations (see Gavel Grab). ”The allegations add to the chaos surrounding judicial appointments in Essex County, where the Republican governor and Democratic lawmakers have been embroiled in a long feud,” a Newark Star-Ledger article said.

State Sens. Richard Codey, Nia Gill and Ronald Rice wrote a letter requesting the investigation, the Associated Press reported.

If the allegations are true, Gill said, “it goes to the independence of the judiciary and the impartiality of the judicial process.
