Court Candidate Urges Reforms in Michigan Judicial Selection

A Democratic candidate for the Michigan Supreme Court is urging reform of the partisan nomination process for top court candidates and greater transparency  in the financing of judicial campaigns.

Bridget Mary McCormack, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, discussed her goals with a Ludington (Mich.) Daily News editor. “The system is not ideal in producing the most independent (court),” McCormack said.

A nonpartisan task force recently urged full disclosure of all funding for state Supreme Court campaign advertising and open, nonpartisan primaries for the Supreme Court (see Gavel Grab).
