Federal District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan escaped by only inches when an unemployed felon fired a high-powered rifle into the judge’s Florida home in June, according to a Florida Times-Union account of an indictment in the case.
A 25-count indictment accused Aaron Markus Richardson of multiple offenses, including attempted murder of a judge. In the past, Judge Corrigan had sentenced Richardson to prison in a firebombing case, and after Richardson recently was charged with theft of computers, he stood to be returned to prison by the judge.
“The attempted murder of a sitting U.S. District Judge represents an attack not only upon an individual, but on the entire judicial system and the rule of law,” said U.S. Attorney Lee Bentley III. “There is no more serious crime that we can prosecute.”
